About Our Meditation
Gregory has studied Zen formally since 1973. Gregory’s primary teacher is Zentatsu Baker Roshi, first student and Dharma Heir of Shunru Suzuki Roshi. Suzuki Roshi and Baker Roshi founded San Francisco Zen Center, Tassajara Monastery (the first Zen Monastery in the United States) and Green Gulch Farm in Marin County. Baker Roshi is also Abbot and founder of Crestone Mountain Zen Center in Crestone, Colorado and the Buddhistisches Studienzentrum (Johanneshof) in Germany’s Black Forest.
Gregory’s other primary teachers have been Chikudo Jerome Petersen Roshi who emphasized The Flower Ornament Sutra as well as Shikantaza and Mitsu Suzuki Sensei, the wife of Shunryu Suzuki Roshi for the Omotosenki style Japanese Tea Ceremony. Other senior teachers have been Dojun Dan Welch, Issan Dorsey, and Zenshin Philip Whalen, who are all dharma heirs of Baker Roshi. Gregory is married to Clare Young-Wood. They live together in San Francisco.
