The Family

The Unesco Collection of Representative Japanese Works

Shimazaki Tōson (1872 - 1943)

Translation and introduction by Cedila Segawa Seigle

1983 Second Edition.  University of Tokyo Press, Tokyo

Illustrated wrappers in FINE condition protected in s clear plastic envelope.  Tan colored endpapers.  311pp.  The Family covers a period of twelve years in the lives of the Koizumi and the Hashimoto families, from 1898 to 1910.  (These two families are based on the real-life families of Shimazaki and Takase: one was Tōson's own family.). The character Sankichi is the youngest son of the Koizumi family, a writer -- an alter ego for the author himself.  The Family is a scarce modern Japanese masterpiece.
